1. Introduction
Happy People Connect Ltd (“Happy People”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) operates the Happy People community platform, including the website at happypeople.live, the mobile web app at app.happypeople.live, and the native mobile applications for iOS and Android (together, the “Service”).
This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, share, and protect personal information when you use the Service. By registering for or using the Service, you agree to this Privacy Policy.
Our Service is intended for members of the Happy People community, primarily in Nigeria and the diaspora. We do not intentionally offer the Service to, or process personal data of, individuals located in the European Union or the United Kingdom.
If you have questions, contact us at privacy@happypeople.ng.
2. Who we are
| Legal name | Happy People Connect Ltd |
| Country | Nigeria |
| Registered address | 10 Peridot Close, Diamond Estate, Sangotedo, Lagos |
| Privacy contact | privacy@happypeople.ng |
| Website | https://www.happypeople.live |
We act as the data controller for personal information processed through the Service, except where another party is identified as a controller (for example, Meta/WhatsApp for use of the WhatsApp application itself).
3. Scope of this policy
This policy applies to:
- The Happy People website and logged-in community features (events, donations, birthdays, tasks, member profiles, and related tools).
- The Happy People mobile apps, which provide access to the same platform (including via an in-app browser where applicable).
- Data our community administration tools process in connection with WhatsApp group operations (for example, messages synced by our bot for community management).
This policy does not govern:
- WhatsApp / Meta — when you use WhatsApp directly, Meta’s privacy policy applies to that use.
- Third-party websites linked from the Service.
4. Information we collect
We collect information you provide, information generated through your use of the Service, and limited technical information needed to operate and secure the Service.
4.1 Account and login
- WordPress username and password (password stored in hashed form)
- Email address (where provided)
- Session and authentication cookies
4.2 Member profile
When you register or maintain your profile, we may collect:
- Identity: alias (community name), forenames, surname, gender
- Contact: WhatsApp phone number, optional mobile number, WhatsApp display name (“pushname”) and related WhatsApp identifiers where synced
- Photos: profile and community photos you upload (up to three profile images)
- Birthday: month and day only — we do not require your birth year for community birthday features
- Location (self-reported): country, city, town, and address fields you choose to provide
- About you: occupation, marital status, business, “about”, likes, dislikes, tags, and links you add
- Community roles and preferences: for example fundraiser, committee, token eligibility, incognito display settings, and similar flags used to run community programmes
4.3 Community activity
Depending on how you participate, we process records relating to:
- Events and donations — celebrant, donor, amounts, tokens, dates, and related metadata
- Birthdays — your month/day birthday and participation in birthday programmes
- Tasks and related programmes — task participation, scores, rockers, and compliance records where applicable
- Registration and vetting — onboarding submissions and approver actions
- Payouts (where applicable) — bank or payment details you provide to receive community disbursements
4.4 WhatsApp-related data
Happy People includes WhatsApp-based community operations. Where our administration bot receives or syncs group messages, we may store:
- Message content, author identifiers, timestamps, and message type
- WhatsApp numbers and display names associated with messages
- Group names and identifiers
- Media references (URLs or filenames) attached to messages, where applicable
We use this information to administer the community (for example birthdays, donations reminders, tasks, and group announcements). WhatsApp itself is operated by Meta Platforms, Inc.; their privacy practices apply to your use of WhatsApp outside our Service.
4.5 Technical and device information
When you use the Service, our servers may automatically receive:
- IP address
- Browser or app user agent (device type, operating system, browser version)
- Date and time of access
- Pages or features accessed and API requests (for security and troubleshooting)
If we enable push notifications in the mobile apps, we may also store a push notification token for your device so we can send Service-related alerts you have agreed to receive.
4.6 Information we do not collect
Based on our current Service design:
- We do not collect precise GPS location from your device.
- We do not use third-party advertising or cross-app tracking SDKs in our mobile apps.
- We do not sell your personal information.
5. How we use your information
We use personal information for the following purposes:
| Purpose | Examples |
|---|---|
| Provide the Service | Account login, profiles, events, donations, birthdays, tasks, and member directory features |
| Run community programmes | Birthday lists, token eligibility, fundraisers, committees, vetting, and compliance workflows |
| WhatsApp community administration | Drum rolls, donation reminders, task notifications, and group tagging via our bot |
| Security and integrity | Authentication, access control, fraud prevention, and audit logs |
| Legal and financial records | Maintaining donation and payout records where required for community accounting |
| Communications | Service notices and, if enabled, push notifications about community activity |
| Improve the Service | Troubleshooting, support, and fixing errors |
We do not use your personal information for third-party advertising or sell it to data brokers.
6. Legal basis (Nigeria)
We process personal information under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 and related regulations (together, “NDPA”), including where processing is:
- Necessary to perform our contract with you (providing membership and community features you sign up for);
- Based on your consent (for example where you submit profile information, photos, or agree at registration);
- Necessary for our legitimate interests (securing the Service, administering the community, preventing misuse), balanced against your rights; or
- Required by law (for example retaining certain financial records).
Where we rely on consent, you may withdraw it by contacting us; withdrawal does not affect processing already lawfully carried out.
7. Who we share information with
We share personal information only as needed to operate the Service:
| Recipient | Why |
|---|---|
| Hosting and infrastructure providers | To run our servers and store data (for example our VPS hosting provider) |
| Community administrators and role holders | Members with assigned roles (for example approvers, fundraisers, committee) may access information required for their duties, subject to access controls |
| Apple / Google | App distribution and, if enabled, push notification delivery |
| WhatsApp / Meta | When you interact in WhatsApp groups; we do not control Meta’s processing |
| Professional advisers or authorities | Where required by law or to protect rights, safety, and security |
We require service providers that handle personal data on our behalf to protect it appropriately. We do not sell personal information.
8. International transfers
Our Service is operated from Nigeria. Personal information is primarily stored and processed in Nigeria on infrastructure we control.
We do not intentionally target or process personal data of individuals in the European Union or the United Kingdom. If you are in the EU or UK, please do not use the Service.
If you access the Service from outside Nigeria (for example from the diaspora), you understand that your information may be processed in Nigeria and in jurisdictions where our infrastructure providers operate.
9. Retention
We keep personal information for as long as your membership is active and as needed to:
- Provide the Service;
- Maintain community and financial records (for example donations and payouts);
- Comply with legal obligations; and
- Resolve disputes and enforce our terms.
When you leave the community or request deletion, we will delete or anonymise personal information where we can, except where we must retain certain records for legal, accounting, or security reasons (for example anonymised donation audit trails).
WhatsApp message archives may be retained for community administration for a period consistent with our operational needs; contact us if you have questions about retention of messages relating to you.
10. Your rights
Under the NDPA and our community practices, you may have the right to:
- Access personal information we hold about you;
- Correct inaccurate or incomplete information (many fields can be updated in your profile or via an administrator);
- Request deletion of your account and associated personal information, subject to legal and community record-keeping requirements;
- Object to certain processing or withdraw consent where processing is consent-based;
- Lodge a complaint with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC).
To exercise your rights, email privacy@happypeople.ng from the email address associated with your account (or identify your community alias and WhatsApp number). We may need to verify your identity before responding.
Account deletion: To request removal from the community and deletion of your profile data, contact privacy@happypeople.ng with the subject line “Account deletion request”. We will confirm what will be deleted and what must be retained (for example financial records).
11. Children
The Service is intended for adults participating in the Happy People community. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18 without appropriate parental or guardian involvement. If you believe a minor has provided us personal information, contact us and we will take appropriate steps to delete it.
12. Security
We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect personal information, including:
- HTTPS encryption in transit;
- Access controls and role-based permissions within the community;
- Hashed storage of passwords via our authentication system.
No method of transmission or storage is completely secure. Please use a strong password and keep your login details confidential.
13. Cookies and similar technologies
The Service uses cookies and similar technologies to:
- Keep you signed in (session and authentication cookies);
- Protect against cross-site request forgery on logged-in requests; and
- Cache static assets in the progressive web app for faster loading.
You can control cookies through your browser settings. Disabling essential cookies may prevent you from staying logged in.
Our mobile apps may use shared cookie storage when loading community pages so your web session works inside the app.
14. Mobile applications
The Happy People iOS and Android apps are clients for the same platform as our website. Personal information you enter in the app is processed on our servers as described in this policy.
If we enable push notifications, you can disable them in your device settings. We will not use push notifications for third-party advertising.
15. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the updated version at https://www.happypeople.live/privacy-policy/ and change the “Last updated” date. Material changes may also be communicated through the Service or community channels where appropriate.
Continued use of the Service after an update means you accept the revised policy.
